In a city that never stops growing, it takes a certain kind of vision not just to keep up... but to build something that lasts. Edgar and Sherena Powell are doing just that.
The husband-and-wife duo behind Azure ATX and Nothing To Do In Austin have quietly become two of the most important names in Austin's Black entertainment and lifestyle scene. Not because they set out to be recognized... but because they set out to serve. And in doing so, they built something the community didn't even know it was missing.
A vision bigger than a business
Austin is changing fast. New residents pour into the city every day, drawn by opportunity, energy, and the promise of something great. But for many in the Black community, that excitement can quickly give way to a familiar question: Where do we go? Where is the Austin nightlife for us?
Edgar and Sherena felt that too. And instead of waiting for someone else to answer it, they decided to build the answer themselves.
Azure ATX is more than a lounge... it's an experience. A sophisticated, Black-owned space where good vibes and a welcoming atmosphere come together to create exactly the kind of environment our community deserves. From intimate nights out to full-on celebrations, Azure has become a destination — a place where Black Austinites can exhale, connect, and feel at home.

And then there's Nothing To Do In Austin... the brand that became a movement. Because let's be honest, that used to be the real answer when someone asked what was going on for us in this city. Edgar and Sherena flipped that narrative on its head, turning "nothing to do" into a platform that highlights events, experiences, and opportunities specifically curated for Austin's Black community, where culture, community, and good energy meet.
More than entertainment — it's infrastructure
What the Powells are doing goes beyond nightlife. They are building cultural infrastructure for a community that has long been spread thin across a rapidly expanding city. No central hub. No clear gathering point. Just pockets of excellence that too few people know about.
Azure ATX and Nothing To Do In Austin are changing that... one event, one night, one connection at a time. They are creating the centralized footprint that Black Austinites needed, a place where the newcomer who just moved here can find their people, and the longtime Austinite can feel seen and celebrated.
The power of showing up
What makes Edgar and Sherena's story so compelling isn't just what they've built... it's how they've built it. With intention. With love for this community. And with the kind of consistency that only comes from people who are genuinely invested in something bigger than themselves.
"They show up. They create. They invite others in. And in doing so, they remind all of us that Black excellence in Austin isn't something we have to search for... it's something we build together."
Keep your eyes on the Powells. They're just getting started.
